Αν και έχει μεταφερθεί με εκατοντάδες εκλεκτά αυτοκίνητα, δεν αποτελεί έκπληξη ότι η η βασίλισσα Ελισάβετ Β', είχε μια προτίμηση στο να οδηγεί η ίδια.
Η πριγκίπισσα μηχανικός αυτοκινήτων
Η μακροβιότερη βασιλεύουσα μονάρχης της Βρετανίας -που απεβίωσε σε ηλικία 96 ετών- ήταν φανατική αυτοκινητίστρια και εκπαιδεύτηκε ως μηχανικός και οδηγός φορτηγού προς το τέλος του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Παρά το γεγονός ότι ο πατέρας της βασιλιάς Γεώργιος ΣΤ' έλεγε ότι η τότε πριγκίπισσα δεν έπρεπε να συμμετάσχει, αντ' αυτού εντάχθηκε σε βοηθητική Υπηρεσία σε ηλικία μόλις 18 ετών. Ένα άρθρο που δημοσιεύθηκε εκείνη την εποχή ανέφερε ότι η Ελισάβετ, "αν και δεν της είχε επιτραπεί ποτέ να μπει σε λεωφορείο ή ταξί του Λονδίνου, πέρασε τα μαθήματα οδήγησης σε δύο ημέρες λιγότερο από τον προβλεπόμενο χρόνο".
Έμαθε τη συντήρηση οχημάτων και πώς να συντηρεί -και να οδηγεί- στρατιωτικά φορτηγά, για το οποίο ο Τύπος την χαρακτήρισε "πριγκίπισσα μηχανικό αυτοκινήτων". Πέρασε πέντε μήνες ως μηχανικός και οδηγός φορτηγού.
Μετά το τέλος του πολέμου και τη διαδοχή της στο θρόνο, η βασίλισσα απολάμβανε μια μεγάλη γκάμα αυτοκινήτων, ιδίως εκείνων που κατασκευάζονταν στη Βρετανία. Η εκλεκτική συλλογή της περιελάμβανε μοντέλα όπως το Rover P5 B, το Vauxhall Cresta estate και ακόμη και μια Jaguar X-Type, και φυσικά κάποιες Rolls-Royce και Bentley. Η Bentley της χάρισε την πρώτη Bentayga κατά την παρουσίαση του SUV με τα δύο turbo.
Το πραγματικό της πάθος, ωστόσο, ήταν η Land Rover. Η προτίμηση της βασίλισσας Ελισάβετ στα Defender και τα Range Rover είναι καλά τεκμηριωμένη, καθώς όχι μόνο οδηγούνταν με ειδικά προετοιμασμένες βασιλικές παραλλαγές κατά τις περιοδείες της στη Βρετανία και σε όλο τον κόσμο, αλλά και για προσωπική χρήση γύρω από τα κτήματά της.
